Combined Heat and Power Generation

Combined heat and power (CHP) is the combined generation of electricity and heat in a single system. Combined heat, power and cooling is a special case. Here, cooling is generated in addition to electrical energy and heat. The advantage of the combined generation of electricity and heat in CHP plants is the particularly efficient utilisation of fuel. Compared to the separate generation of electricity and heat, this results in significantly better efficiency levels.

Is CHP also interesting for me?

CHP systems are most economical when both the generated heat and the generated electricity can be utilised in the company. The revenue from a CHP system can therefore be calculated from the heat utilised, the avoided electricity consumption, the surcharges under the KWKG/EEG and any subsidies, for example for heat storage, heating or cooling networks.

In addition to fossil fuels, alternative fuels such as bioethanol, wood chips or pellets are also used in the combined generation of electricity and heat.

CHP systems for industry

CHP systems for the industrial sector:

  • Combustion plants with steam turbines (back pressure plants, extraction and tapping condensation plants)
  • Combustion systems with steam engines
  • (Micro) gas turbine plants (with waste heat boiler or with waste heat boiler and steam turbine plant)
  • Combustion engine systems (CHP)
  • Stirling engines
  • Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) plants and
  • Fuel cell systems

What can we do for you?

The following planning and conceptual steps were to be developed as part of a feasibility study prior to realisation:

  • Load profile analysis for heat and electricity demand
  • Determination of basic principles and technical framework conditions
  • Examination of technical feasibility
  • Obtaining target price quotations for key system components
  • Design of various system concepts taking into account the local conditions (rough dimensioning of the units)
  • Profitability assessment of the system concepts, taking into account the individual energy costs and charges
  • Sensitivity analysis on the impact of changed energy prices

Selected projects

For these industrial companies, we have developed concepts for energy supply with CHP systems, thus ensuring long-term economic energy generation.
